TN GOVT.
ASKS FOR 50% SEATS
Mar 14
Buzz is that the TN Govt. has asked for 50% of the seats in the Postgraduate
and superspeciality courses in CMC, justifying it with the recent sc judgement on "self financing, unaided colleges". In the
mean time, meetings are being held in CMC regarding the next plan of action at this juncture. The most dreadful thing is the
fact that if infact the govt. manages to get the seats, then there might be candidates getting into CMC, more by political
support than merit. And a lack of control of the management over these candidates is only expected. And hence the work ethics
and discipline of the place may be totally lost making us no different than any other institution in this country...well lets
all pray and hope that GOD be with all of us to save this Institution.
CMC SIGNS MoU WITH
SINGAPORE AND CALIFORNIAN UNIVERSITIES JAN 17
Dear colleagues and friends, I have some exciting news to share with
you. Last week we had four important visitors - Professor Edward Holmes, Vice Chancellor, University of California, San Diego,
USA Professor Kenneth R.Chien, Director, Insititute of Molecular Medicine, UCSD,USA,Professor John Wong, Dean, National University
of Singapore, Professor Ajit Varki, Co-Director, GRTC, UCSD, USA.
They visited several departments and had discussions
with many members of our faculty. Consultations followed and we have decided on a tripartite agreement - University of California,
San Diego, National University of Singapore and the Christian Medical College Vellore will enter into a partnership with a
Memorandum of Understanding to work together in the years ahead. This will open out many new possibilities for CMC - staff
and students placement, fellowships, scholarships, opportunities for collaborative research and other initiatives. We are
grateful to God for this blessings given to us at the beginning of this year.
Yours sincerely, George M. Chandy Director
SC INTERIM VERDICT 2003 IN FAVOUR OF CMC
Supreme courts verdict in
the belowmentioned case was passed on Jul 3rd in favour of CMC allowing us to select our own students for MBBS course. The
interview list for mbbs selection for this year is out today. The following is the relevant portion of the verdict: Judges Lahoti and Brijesh Kumar who heard our petition in the
Supreme Court have stated 'It is not disputed that the petitioner institution is an
unaided minority medical college and the admissions are made on merit based on
All India Common Entrance test conducted by the petitioner ..Prima facie, we are of the opinion that the allotment of seats
in an unaided minority institution cannot be controlled by the Government. It
is therefore directed that for the current year, i.e., 2003-2004, the allotment of
seats shall be done in the same manner as has been done hitherto. This is an interim order. All matters relating to unaided
institutions have been listed for hearing before a Constitution bench of five honourable judges of the Supreme Court on July
22.
SC HEARING
POSTPONED TO JULY 3RD
The Supreme Court hearing on the CMC petition against the Tamilnadu Government's G.O. with regards to
a 40% state quota in CMC admissions has been postponed to the 3rd of July. Meanwhile the Tamilnadu Government had promised
that it will not conduct counselling for the medical seats of CMC Vellore. CMC results will be out only after the judgement is
passed in this matter.
SUPREME
COURT HEARING ON 16TH JUNE, ON STATE QUOTA FOR UNDER-GRADUATE ADMISSION OF CMC
Jun12
Recollect that The Supreme
Court of India had passed its judgment on the case regarding the question of allowing minority institutions to conduct their
own selection program for candidates for various courses, especially MBBS in favor of Christian Medical College, Vellore and
other Unaided, Non-capitation fee Minority Institutions by allowing us by the law of the land to continue the autonomous selection
process! Recently there was a state G.O. stating that all the private medical colleges in the state will have to fill in at
least 40% of their seats through the common Tamilnadu PG entrance examination, which restricts it to the students of Tamilnadu
only. Of course this would take off the autonomous and fair selection process that is currently on in this esteemed institution
which is one of the best medical colleges in Asia. CMC had petitioned at the SC with regards to this problem earlier and the SC had asked for an explanation from the
State Government as to how it could take away the right of the institution provided by the law of the land. The hearing and
the judgment on this matter would be on the 16th June 2003. The Entrance examination
for CMC had taken place last month and the results of this exam are held up until this judgment. Let us all pray for a fair
hearing and a decision in favor of this institution.

"HE IS ME" FROM NEPAL
Hi, Merry Christmas & Happy New year 2003. May our good God give you happiness, joy & peace of mind as
you continue to trust in Him. Now am working in a very remote & the isolated mission hospital in a place called
Okhaldhunga about a 35 min flight plus 3-4 hour walk from Kathmandu. Here the electricity, telephone and other Infrastructure
has been destroyed by Maoist. I arrived in Kathmandu on Friday from Okhaldhunga, the flight was delayed for 6 hours
and I am glad that it was not cancelled! , praise be to God ; its nice to be back home. The situation in Okhaldhunga
is still difficult. After about 7 weeks of no electricity , weve got a new generator & things are slightly easier. Did
you hear about the attack in Okhaldhunga by the Maoist? I was there that time , the whole night was
disturbed with multiple bombardments & the continuous firing from the night vision helicopter .It was an unbelievable
situation, could not sleep the whole night. But by the grace of God , nothing happened to us & the hospital
and the airport which the Maoists aimed to destroy .About 47 people were reported dead. The rumour is that
the Maoists are planning to attack again. I hope & pray that God is continueing to bless you in your work
& in your spiritual life. My flight to Okhaldhunga is on 29th of Dec. Please remember to pray for me and the people
of Okhaldhunga Hospital. Love, Simon
