Dr.Ida Scudder, Founder, Christian
Medical College, Vellore 1900
Vellore Christian Medical College & Hospital, known simply as "CMC",
is one of those unique organizations that you fall in love with at first sight. At its heart is the story of the founder,
Ida S. Scudder, and the thousands of dedicated men and women who have followed her at CMC in India.
The story of Ida
Scudder's visionary mission begins in the late 1800's when she was a young American girl reluctantly visiting her medical
missionary father, John Scudder, at his post in Tamil Nadu, South India. One fateful night, Ida was asked to help three women
from different families struggling in difficult childbirth. Custom prevented their husbands from accepting the help of a male
doctor for them and being without training at that time, Ida herself could do nothing. The next morning she was shocked to
learn that each of the three women had died. She believed that it was a calling and a challenge set before her by God to begin
a ministry dedicated to the health needs of the people of India, particularly women and children. Consequently, Ida went back
to America, entered medical training (practically unheard of for women at that time) and, in 1899, was one of the first women
graduates of the Cornell Medical College.
Shortly thereafter, she returned to India and opened a one-bed clinic in
Vellore in 1900. Two years later, in 1902, she built a 40-bed hospital, the forerunner of today's 1700-bed medical center.
In 1909, she started the School of Nursing, and in 1918, her fondest dream came true with the opening of a medical school
for women. (Men were admitted in 1947). With the training of these women as doctors and nurses, Indian women would now begin
to have access to health care professionals. This was the beginning of the vision of Ida S. Scudder which continues to grow
to this day.
In addition to the care of women, Ida Scudder saw the need for bringing health care to the poor, the
disabled, and the neglected of India. She traveled regularly to outlying villages, bringing medical care to the doorstep of
poor villagers, many of whom had never seen a real doctor or nurse, starting CMC's first "roadside" dispensary in 1916. Over
the years, these roadside dispensaries have developed into extensive rural health and development programs that have become
internationally acclaimed in the Community Health field. These dispensaries have attracted members of the medical community
from around the world, from young medical students to nurses to highly skilled surgeons, to study and contribute their skills.
The 100 years since Ida Scudder opened the first small clinic have seen remarkable growth. Here is an example of the
daily activity that goes on there today: 2,000 outpatients per day, 1,000 inpatients, 43 operations, 22 clinics, and 16 births.
Ten Bible Classes are held each day and 380 patients are visited by a Chaplain. In addition, there is the work of CHAD, CONCH,
and RUSHA, which go out to the villages and rural areas bringing methods of disease prevention, health care and community
empowerment to tens of thousands more. Started with one woman and her vision, CMC employs over 4300 people today.
But,
the story of CMC is not merely growth, high tech surgery, and medical degrees. It is the story of people sharing their time
and talents in a loving and caring manner. Throughout its history CMC has taken up each new task in response to Christ's command.
In the words of Ida Scudder, ";we thank God for the way He has led us in the past and look forward to an even greater future."

Christian Medical College, Vellore, in the year 2000, has completed 100 years of service in the healing ministry.
The celebration of the centenary year has given
us many opportunities for thanksgiving to God and to all who have contributed to the growth of the mission and work of our
institution. It has also enabled us to reflect on the values that have sustained the work through many challenging times
and situations. There has been a renewal of the commitment first demonstrated by our Founder, Dr. Ida Scudder, to provide
education, and service of the highest quality, in the spirit of Christ.
We now comprise a medical college with graduate
courses in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Laboratory Technology, and Medical Records Science, 10 postgraduate
medical diploma courses, 23 postgraduate degree courses, and 10 higher specialty courses. The Medical College also offers
a variety of allied health sciences diploma programmes.
The College of Nursing runs diploma and degree courses
in nursing, with postgraduate certificate, masters and doctoral programmes. Christian Medical College, Vellore sees
itself as primarily in professional education. In order to remain relevant to the needs of India, all educational programmes
have a large in-service component. Community-based education and research have been among the major contributions of
our institution.
Primary level patient care services are provided
through four outreach programmes. The Community Health and Development (CHAD) programmes operates out of the college
campus and covers a population of 2,25,0000. Epidemiological research and community-based educational programmes continue
to attract students and visitors from around the world. The Rural Unit For Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) located
about 30 km fronm Vellore is also involved in education and in social and economic development. The College of Nursing
Community Health (CONCH) programmes cover mainly maternal and child health for a population of 57,000 (including the
urban programmes). The Low Cost Effective Care Unit provides medical care for the underprivileged in the urban slums
of Vellore, and operates out of the Schell Campus in the heart of town.
The main hospital campus in Vellore town, the Mental
Health Center and Rehabilitation Center in the college campus, the base hospitals at CHAD and RUHSA and the Ida Scudder Ward
and Eye Hospital in the Schell Campus, provide over 1,700 beds. The services range from internal medicine and child
health to neurology and neurosurgery, organ transplanation, advanced cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
Christian Medical
College, Vellore, has demonstrated that it is possible to be committed to quality primary care while encouraging the
development of excellent tertiary care health services. This "both, and" approach is possible in the context of a holistic
understanding of health and healing.
Research relevant to the country's needs is encouraged
with institutional grants as seed money to initiate projects. National and international funding agencies currently
support research in fields including population studies on growth and development, basic science research in organ transplantation,
HIV-AIDS, invasive bacterial infections, diarrhoeal disease, hematological malignancies, bone marrow transplantation, and
rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.
Christian Medical
College, Vellore, is currently involved in a variety of networks which provide partnerships in one or other of our
areas of activity. As a member of INDIACLEN and INCLEN, collaborative research with partners both in India and overseas
is encouraged. Membership in the Network of Community Oriented Educational Institutions has strengthened the development
of community -oriented education programmes. With the Christian Medical Association of India, we work with smaller Christian
mission hospitals in India. We continue to look for partnerships with those who share our ideals and our objectives.
Memoranda of understanding with organizations and universities outside of India enable faculty exchange and research collaboration.
We look forward to a second century of service,
with the confidence that God will continue to guide us into a deeper understanding of our motto "Not to be Ministered unto,
but to Minister."

College Chapel
College Song SILVER AND BLUE
Girded round by her strong and ageless mountains Stands the college we'll honour ever more We thy children shall strive
to reflect thee Thou bright glowing gem of Vellore. As your banner we wave proudly o'er us And together we chorus
your praise In your blue we see loyalty's emblem And truth in your silver's bright rays.
Three cheers for the silver and blue India's star in the sky clear and true, Clouds of suffering we'd banish for ever
Three cheers for the silver and blue!
Not for fame not for wealth our endeavour Pride of race nor of creed be our boast, Each for all, all for each, thus
forever United from coast unto coast. Strong to serve, strong to save the defenceless May thy spirit inspire us
anew; Not to gain but to give be our motto Three cheers for the silver and blue
Three cheers for the silver and blue India's star in the sky clear and true, Clouds of suffering we'd banish for ever
Three cheers for the silver and blue!
ALMA MATER
Alma mater; we cherish thee For all the deeds thou'st wrought: Oh may we ever heedful be To the truths that thou
has taught. O lovely College of Vellore To thee our song we'll raise And loyalty shall be the theme One
endless note of praise. Our College dear and all her dreams For ever will be near; And though in distant
parts we roam, Her spirit will be near. Then Loyalty to our Vellore And may you prosperous be, Till all
the land of India Her praise will sing to thee. Our India so beautiful With hills and rolling plains And
over all her beauties grand The sun of Peace shall reign Oh India, Oh India God, grant us grace to be The
best and noblest of our race We'll live and die for thee!
